A Ruby Light for SATB choir [CONCERT]

Saturday 14 December 2019 at Christ Church, West Didsbury, Manchester (UK) at 7.30 pm my new choral composition called A Ruby Light. It will be performed by Kantos Chamber Choir conducted by Ellie Slorach in a dedicated to A Christmas in Literature.

The composition’s lyrics is based on the poem The Wise Men by the Italian poet Gabriele D’Annunzio (1863–1938). It is part of a poetry collection called Laudi del cielo (Praise of the sky), published between 1903 and 1912. The poem is a characteristic example of D’Annunzio’s panism style: a deep perception of the outside world which creates a fusion between the natural and the human elements. The poem portraits a Nativity scene immersed and overwhelmed by the natural and the supernatural worlds. It evokes a sense of vibrant calm and mystery that pictures perfectly the Holy event. The music translates these elements by using the opening image of A ruby light as a recurring long harmonic theme pervading middle sections that in the poem, they narrate classic elements of Christmas: the Infant in the manger, the Angels singing and the Wise Men donating their presents.
